December 2023--Out with the old and in with the new
Share
Breaking down a summer garden is a bit like saying goodbye for now. With an imminent freeze, you harvest the last of your peppers and get creative with how to best preserve them. [Dehydration is our method of choice for end of season peppers.] Of course, we save the seeds and know we will see a version of that plant the next year because we will sow the genetics of that plant again, but that doesn't make it any easier to rip out your root happy plants. It feels a bit unceremonious and hurtful.
That being said--out with the old and in with the new. You must move forward and replants, which is one of the hardest things for me...but not for Mike. He lives for the changeover, where new plants may be given a chance to flourish and thrive. With optimism and hope, we plant the seeds of new life and opportunity. We planted the following in neat little rows: Baker Creek 'Zebrune Shallot', Sow Easy 'Halloween Mix' radishesBotanical Interest 'Chef's Medley' (phenomenal), Seed Saver's Exchange 'Bull's Blood' beets, Johnny's Selected Seeds 'Wildfire Lettuce Mix' (highly recommend), Seed Saver's Exchange 'Seed Savers Mixture' (super showy and delicious) and Seed Saver's Exchange 'Red Russian' kale.
