Meet Inca--My Little Garden Helper

No dog is better equipped to protect a garden from vermin quite as well as a rat terrier. Our baby girl, Inca, has been gardening with me since she was a wee little thing. In particular, at our first Laurel garden location, she loved to patrol for the well-fed mice that traversed the space. A true Tom and Jerry-esque relationship ensued, in which Inca chased but never quite caught the scurrying mice.

It is important to remember that our "garden space" was a parking lot before we fenced it and built our concrete block beds. We also removed the gravel in some places, amended the soil and planted into the hard pan red MS clay underneath. It just goes to show you that with the right amendments, creativity, grit and determination (and a good garden pest control agent like Inca), you can grow vegetables just about anywhere.
